Sky Blues Deliver Dramatic Late Blow at Riverside
Coventry City produced a stunning late show to defeat Middlesbrough 4-2 in a Championship thriller at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday night. The victory extends the Sky Blues' lead at the summit of the table to a commanding 10 points.
Early Dominance from the Leaders
The visitors made a dream start, taking control with two early goals. Ellis Simms opened the scoring after just 10 minutes with a magnificent curling effort that found the top corner, following excellent build-up play from Victor Torp. The lead was doubled only four minutes later when captain Matt Grimes delivered a perfect ball into the box for Liam Kitching to power a header home.
Despite Middlesbrough's bright opening, they found themselves two goals down within the first quarter of an hour, struggling to contain Coventry's incisive attacks.
Boro Fight Back to Level Terms
The home side, under the interim management of Adi Viveash, began to find their footing. They pulled a goal back in the 32nd minute when Morgan Whittaker capitalised on a flick-on from Alfie Jones to slot the ball home.
After the break, Boro completed their comeback. Just four minutes into the second half, a corner caused chaos in the Coventry box, resulting in defender Bobby Thomas turning the ball into his own net to make it 2-2. The home side enjoyed a period of dominance, with both Tommy Conway and Whittaker coming close to giving them the lead.
Late Drama Seals the Points
Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Coventry delivered a devastating one-two punch in the final five minutes. In the 85th minute, Liam Kitching fired home after Boro goalkeeper Sol Brynn could only parry a strike from Bobby Thomas.
Incredibly, just 60 seconds later, Ellis Simms sealed the victory, nodding in from close range after a cross from Jay Dasilva. The two quickfire goals secured a massive three points for the league leaders.
The result sees Coventry solidify their position at the top, while Middlesbrough, who introduced new boss Kim Hellberg to the crowd before kick-off, drop to third place in the Championship table.
