An awkward reunion is on the cards at Stamford Bridge this summer as new Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior prepares to welcome a player he once disciplined at his former club.
The Strasbourg Suspension
Future Chelsea forward Emmanuel Emegha was suspended by French club RC Strasbourg Alsace in early December 2025. The then-Strasbourg boss, Liam Rosenior, handed the Dutch striker a one-match ban for a Ligue 1 fixture against Toulouse. The club stated the punishment was due to Emegha failing to respect "the club's values, expectations and rules," though no specific incident was detailed publicly.
At the time, Rosenior clarified that the suspension stemmed from "clumsy comments to the press" made by the 22-year-old. "Emma made some clumsy comments to the press that hurt a lot of people, and he had to be punished for that," Rosenior said. "He also needs to realise that every action has consequences."
Emegha's Response and Chelsea Move
Emegha, who had worn the captain's armband for Strasbourg, accepted the disciplinary action. Taking to Instagram, he stated: "I accept and understand the club's decision to suspend me for this weekend. I'm 22-years-old, I've made mistakes and I know I still have a lot to learn."
The striker emphasised his commitment, adding he was "proud to play for Racing" and would strive to do better both on and off the pitch. This incident occurred despite Emegha having already secured a major move to the Premier League. He agreed a pre-contract with Chelsea in September 2025 and is set to join the club on a long-term seven-year deal when the summer 2026 transfer window opens.
Rosenior's Chelsea Era Begins
The dynamics of their past relationship will now be tested in West London. Rosenior, 41, was appointed Chelsea manager in January 2026. His first official duties included observing the team's match against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday, 7th January, before leading his first training session the following day.
His first team selection will be for Chelsea's FA Cup third-round tie against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, 10th January. All this sets the stage for a fascinating managerial chapter at Chelsea, one which will soon involve integrating a talented but previously disciplined player he knows well from their shared past in France.
The coming months will reveal how both manager and player navigate their renewed professional relationship, with Emegha's discipline and attitude likely to be under close scrutiny from the outset of his Chelsea career.
