Champions League star Thierry Steimetz dies aged 42

The football world is in mourning following the death of former professional midfielder Thierry Steimetz, who has passed away at the age of 42 after a lengthy illness.

A career cut short by illness

Thierry Steimetz died on Sunday, 11 January 2026, nine years after a devastating diagnosis forced him to retire from playing. The French footballer's career was abruptly ended in 2017 when he underwent a leg amputation due to a malignant tumour.

His playing journey took him across several clubs in France, Luxembourg, and Germany. He is best known for his spells with the reserve team of Lens, FC Metz in Ligue 1, and Luxembourgish champions F91 Dudelange. During his time with Dudelange, Steimetz featured in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds, marking the pinnacle of his on-field career.

Transition to coaching and lasting legacy

After his playing days were over, Steimetz channeled his passion into coaching. He took the helm at amateur French side SSEP Hombourg-Haut in 2018, leading them to multiple successes at the regional level and earning great respect in Lorraine football circles.

The news of his passing was formally announced by the French professional footballers' union, the UNFP. In a heartfelt statement on social media, they expressed their "great sadness" and highlighted Steimetz as "a respected figure in Lorraine and Luxembourg football."

Football community pays emotional tribute

FC Metz, where Steimetz played during the 2011-2012 season, held a minute's silence before their Coupe de France match against Montpellier on Sunday. The club posted a tribute online, extending its "sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones."

His most recent club, SSEP Hombourg-Haut, shared an emotional and lengthy statement. They described Steimetz as "more than a coach," but a "man of values" whose "smile, passion and energy will remain etched in our memories." In a moving gesture to honour him permanently, the club committee announced it would officially request that their future synthetic pitch be named after Thierry Steimetz.

The football family has lost a talented player and a dedicated coach, remembered for his impressive technical ability and his courageous battle off the pitch.
