Bristol City Football Club has been plunged into crisis after appalling video evidence emerged showing a section of their supporters directing vile racist abuse at Bournemouth and Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo.
The shocking incident occurred during the Cherries' 1-0 Carabao Cup victory at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night, casting a dark shadow over the Championship clash.
Disturbing Video Evidence Surfaces
Footage widely circulated on social media captures a group of home fans making monkey gestures and hurling racist taunts towards the 23-year-old forward as he prepared to take a throw-in. The former Robins player, who made a £10 million move to the Premier League side in January 2023, was visibly affected by the abuse.
One particularly disturbing clip shows multiple individuals in the home section making offensive gestures while shouting obscenities at the Ghana international.
Club Launches Immediate Investigation
Bristol City officials have responded with urgency, announcing a full investigation in conjunction with Avon and Somerset Police. The club released a strong statement condemning the behaviour, stating they operate a 'zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination of any kind'.
The club emphasised: 'We are aware of a video circulating on social media showing a small group of supporters engaged in discriminatory behaviour. We are working to identify those involved and will take appropriate action.'
Football Community United in Condemnation
The football world has rallied in support of Semenyo, with anti-racism charity Kick It Out leading calls for decisive action. A spokesperson described the incident as 'deplorable' and urged anyone with information to come forward.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola expressed his disappointment, noting that such incidents have no place in football or society. Semenyo, who came through Bristol City's academy and made over 100 appearances for the club, has yet to make a public statement about the abuse.
The incident represents another troubling chapter in football's ongoing battle against discrimination, with authorities under increasing pressure to implement stronger measures and lifetime bans for offenders.
