Ben White Set for Crucial Talks with England Teammates After World Cup Exit
Thomas Tuchel, the England manager, has disclosed that Ben White is currently engaging in 'clear the air' discussions with his international teammates who were present during his abrupt departure from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Arsenal defender, aged 28, made the decision to leave the England camp following the group stage, with initial reports suggesting a conflict involving Gareth Southgate's assistant coach, Steve Holland.
Since that incident, White has not featured for the national team, consistently declining invitations to rejoin Southgate's squads. His recent return comes as a late replacement for the injured Jarrell Quansah, marking his first call-up in over three years. Tuchel emphasized that White is now in the process of explaining his prolonged absence to key players such as Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, and Jordan Pickford.
Tuchel's Perspective on White's Return
"Everyone deserves a second chance, but I don't even know if he did something wrong or what exactly happened," stated Tuchel. "If you believe it or not, I didn't hear a story about it. I asked him and he didn't want to speak about it. I didn't want to know about it because I think he deserves a second chance. He has not put a foot wrong with me."
Tuchel acknowledged that White's departure from a major tournament was significant, hinting at underlying issues. "Something must have happened, because if a player leaves from a tournament it's never good and it never can be nothing," he added. The manager clarified that while an apology might not be necessary, clearing the air with teammates is essential. "An explanation among the players who were there, to clear the air, is sure in progress. I'm not sure if 'apologise' is the right word, but maybe just to clear the air with the players who were there, I think he has done and will do with the majority of the players who come now."
Fan Support and Team Dynamics
If White features in the upcoming match against Uruguay at Wembley, Tuchel has urged supporters to refrain from booing him. "I hope everyone can support, because he plays for England and we play in a positive moment," he said. "I can imagine there are some strong opinions out there. People have to trust me that he behaves very, very well. He was positive about coming back and was desperate for many months to come back. Now he has the chance and is eager to prove a point. Hopefully people give him a fair chance."
Competition for Places: Cole Palmer Under Pressure
Meanwhile, Tuchel highlighted the pressure on Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer to impress during this international camp. Palmer has only made one appearance under Tuchel and faces stiff competition from Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze for the number 10 role.
"Honestly, he has to show because we have more evidence without him than with him, so the pressure is on him," Tuchel remarked. "He cannot hold back. He needs to understand he fights for his place and we will not hand anything to anyone on a silver platter."
Tuchel noted Palmer's challenging season but observed signs of improvement. "I saw him live against Arsenal and for the first time in a long time, I had the feeling his stride was back to the original lengths. Before I felt he was not free and the stride was not long enough, the acceleration was not there and the movement was not free." He added that Palmer is regaining confidence and actively participating in training, which is crucial for his integration into the squad.
Team News and Likely Lineup
In other developments, Jordan Pickford is expected to captain England in the upcoming match, with John Stones likely sidelined due to a calf injury. The probable starting XI includes:
- Goalkeeper: Jordan Pickford
- Defenders: Tino Livramento, Fikayo Tomori, Harry Maguire, Lewis Hall
- Midfielders: Kobbie Mainoo, Adam Wharton
- Forwards: Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin
This lineup reflects Tuchel's strategic adjustments as England prepares for their fixture against Uruguay, with all eyes on how White and Palmer perform in this high-stakes environment.
