Arsenal Transfer News: Striker Offer and Attack Priority

Arsenal's Summer Transfer Strategy Under Scrutiny

Speculation is intensifying around Arsenal's transfer plans for the upcoming summer window, despite the current season still being in full swing. The Gunners are currently on an international break, with many players representing their national teams, before they resume action in the FA Cup quarter-finals against Southampton on April 4.

This pause comes at a critical juncture, allowing the team to regroup after a disappointing 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, which many consider their most significant setback of the campaign so far.

Nevertheless, Mikel Arteta's squad remains at the summit of the Premier League, holding a commanding nine-point lead. Additionally, they are preparing for a Champions League quarter-final clash with Sporting CP, where they are favoured to advance.

Carragher's Call for a Superstar Attacker

Jamie Carragher has emphasised that Arsenal's top priority this summer should be acquiring a world-class forward. The team has faced criticism this season for a lack of creativity in the final third, with key players like Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka not meeting the high standards they previously set.

Saka, Arteta's most effective attacker, has only managed nine goals across all competitions to date. Carragher argues that Arsenal need to bring in a talismanic figure similar to Mohamed Salah, stating that the forward line has failed to gel this season.

During an analysis on The Overlap, Carragher explained: "I don't think it will affect the league because Arsenal have such a big gap. But my concern with Arsenal now is there aren't enough special players. They are the best team in the league with an amazing record, yet I look at the attack and think it's only okay. There's no star player, and sometimes you need that when you're not playing well, like in the cup final."

He added: "I thought two years ago that Saka and Odegaard would become like Salah and Kevin De Bruyne. They were nearly there. Arsenal are likely to win the league, but if they do, I doubt any attacking players will feel they've had an amazing season. It just hasn't clicked."

Julian Alvarez Set for Lucrative New Deal

In transfer news, Arsenal target Julian Alvarez is reportedly poised to receive a substantial contract offer from Atletico Madrid, aimed at securing his long-term future at the club. The 26-year-old Argentine forward has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks ahead of the summer window.

Arteta is known to be a long-time admirer of Alvarez, having considered a move for him before he joined Atletico in 2024. Interestingly, Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, was instrumental in signing Alvarez for Atletico prior to his own move to north London.

While Barcelona and Chelsea have also shown interest in Alvarez, Atletico are confident they can retain him by making him one of their highest earners. According to Mundo Deportivo, the club is ready to meet his financial demands with a proposed salary of approximately €10 million (£8 million) per year, up from his current €7 million (£6 million).

Alvarez, who has scored 17 goals this season, is under contract until 2030 with a €500 million (£432 million) release clause, far exceeding the €100 million Barcelona are reportedly willing to offer. Although formal negotiations have not yet commenced, Atletico remain optimistic that Alvarez's positive adaptation to life in Madrid will be a decisive factor in his decision to stay.
