The Dutch manager, who led Liverpool to Premier League glory just six months ago, now finds his position under intense scrutiny following heavy defeats to Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has delivered a brutal assessment of Slot's tenure, insisting the manager must secure seven points from upcoming matches against West Ham United, Sunderland and Leeds United to have any chance of remaining in charge.
Carragher's Stark Warning
In his Telegraph column, Carragher declared: "Arne Slot has a week to save his job. No matter how much goodwill the manager has, Liverpool Football Club cannot sustain the drop in standards witnessed over the past three months."
The former defender, who made over 700 appearances for Liverpool, added that Slot's continued selection of error-prone defender Ibrahima Konate could be considered a "sackable offence" given the team's defensive frailties.
Slot's Defiant Stance
Despite the growing pressure, Slot remains defiant about his future at the club. Following the 4-1 Champions League thrashing by PSV, the manager stated: "I am feeling safe, I am OK. I have got a lot of support from above. It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory, of course, but if you are not doing well, then it is normal that questions are asked."
The Liverpool boss emphasised his commitment to improving results, saying: "We fight on. And we try to improve, that is what we all try. The conversations have been the same as the last 18 months. It's not about individuals but the team collectively needing to perform better."
Klopp Speculation Intensifies
Compounding Slot's difficulties, speculation about a potential return for former manager Jurgen Klopp continues to gather pace. The German, who left Liverpool at the end of last season, recently revealed on the Diary of a CEO podcast that a return to Anfield was "theoretically possible", though he had previously insisted he had no plans to return to management.
German media have been particularly vocal about the situation, with BILD reporter Marcel Reif stating: "Liverpool isn't just in a mess. It's practically burned to the ground! All of Liverpool would carry him back on their shoulders. And it would be negligent if they didn't try to bring Klopp back."
Bayern Munich chief Uli Hoeness added fuel to the fire by questioning Klopp's current role as head of global soccer with the Red Bull group, suggesting the German was better suited to hands-on management than administrative duties.
