Organisers from The Jockey Club reported that crowds for the inaugural day of racing surpassed 28,000, marking a notable 22 per cent increase compared to the previous year. Typically, more than 45,000 spectators converge on Aintree specifically for Ladies Day. Over the entire three-day festival, more than 150,000 racegoers are anticipated, culminating in the showcase Grand National event on Saturday afternoon. An estimated £250 million is projected to be wagered on that race alone.
A Relaxed and Daring Fashion Ethos
In contrast to Royal Ascot, which enforces stricter dress codes, the Aintree festival adopts a more lenient approach, simply encouraging attendees to arrive 'dressed to feel your best'. The colour yellow distinctly emerged as a recurring theme throughout the day, as glamorous attendees brought a touch of sunshine to the event in stunning off-the-shoulder frocks and elegant halterneck dresses. The festival, scheduled this year from Thursday, April 9th, to Saturday, April 11th, stands as one of the most significant events on the global sporting calendar.
Global Broadcast and Racing Highlights
The event is broadcast live to a television audience of approximately 800 million people worldwide. The Grand National on Saturday, famously known as the 'people's race', features 30 fences over two demanding laps, securing its status as the longest horse race in Britain.
Focus on the Favourite
Following the withdrawal of last year's champion, Nick Rockett, on Thursday, the 2024 titleholder, I Am Maximus, is poised to enter Saturday's race as the favourite among the 34 declared runners. This Willie Mullins-trained thoroughbred triumphed in the feature race two years prior and secured second place behind stablemate Nick Rockett last year. He now aims to become the first dual winner since Tiger Roll, who achieved back-to-back National victories in 2019.
