Western Bulldogs AFLW star Richelle Cranston has bravely revealed her battle with a rare kidney disease and the life-saving transplant that gave her a second chance—all while facing cruel online abuse from trolls.
The 29-year-old athlete was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a condition that attacks the kidneys, in 2019. Despite her health struggles, Cranston continued to play elite-level football, showcasing her resilience and determination.
A Life-Saving Gift
In 2022, Cranston received a kidney transplant from her partner, Ashleigh, in a gruelling 10-hour surgery. "I wouldn't be here without her," Cranston emotionally shared. The operation was successful, but the recovery process proved challenging for the professional athlete.
The Dark Side of Social Media
While battling her health condition, Cranston faced another unexpected adversary—online trolls. "People would comment on my appearance, not knowing what I was going through," she revealed. The AFLW star admitted the negative comments took a toll on her mental health during an already difficult period.
Returning to the Field
Remarkably, Cranston made her return to AFLW just 12 months after her transplant, defying medical expectations. Her comeback has inspired teammates and fans alike, proving her extraordinary strength both on and off the field.
Now, Cranston uses her platform to raise awareness about organ donation and the importance of kindness online. "If my story helps just one person, it's worth sharing," she said.
