The ‘Finalissima’ football match between Spain and Argentina, scheduled for 27 March at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, has been cancelled due to the conflict in the Middle East. UEFA and Qatari organisers concluded the match could not take place because of the ‘current political situation’ in the region.
UEFA expressed disappointment that circumstances prevented the teams from competing for the prestigious prize. Alternative options were explored, including staging the match at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium with a 50:50 split of supporters, or a two-legged tie at the Bernabéu and in Buenos Aires. However, the Argentinian Football Association rejected both proposals.
Argentina counter-offered to play after the World Cup, but Spain had no available dates. The cancellation is a major blow to the revived contest between European and South American champions. Argentina won the first edition in 2022, beating Italy 3-0 at Wembley.
The cancellation follows Formula One’s decision to cancel April’s Bahrain and Saudi Arabia grands prix due to the ongoing war, while MotoGP postponed the Qatar Grand Prix from April to November.
