World Cup suspension rules: England get boost ahead of Argentina semi-final

England have received a significant boost ahead of their World Cup semi-final against Argentina, with no players currently at risk of suspension due to yellow card accumulation. FIFA tournament regulations stipulate that players who receive two yellow cards in separate matches are handed a one-match ban, but these tallies are reset after the quarter-final stage.

No England players on a yellow card

Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Marc Guehi and Nico O'Reilly all faced suspension against Argentina if they had been booked in the quarter-final against Norway. However, all four players escaped without a caution, meaning England's entire squad is free from yellow-card worries heading into the semi-final.

Reset rules and final eligibility

Existing yellow cards were wiped after the quarter-finals, so no player can miss the World Cup final due to picking up a yellow card in the semi-final. Only a red card in the semi-final would lead to a suspension for the final, according to FIFA regulations.

Quansah suspended for semi-final

Jarell Quansah remains the only England player suspended for the clash against Argentina. The Bayer Leverkusen defender was shown a straight red card against Mexico for a heavy challenge on Jesus Gallardo. Although FIFA disciplinary regulations typically impose a one-game ban for a direct red card, the governing body extended it to two games after deeming the challenge as serious foul play. Quansah missed the Norway game and will also be absent for Argentina, but he will be available for the World Cup final should England progress.
