England manager Thomas Tuchel has disclosed the "emotional" impact of Jordan Henderson's pre-match speech that galvanised the team before their 6-4 World Cup bronze final victory over France. The win secured England's best World Cup finish since 1966, as they claimed third place in Miami on Saturday.
Henderson's absence and influence
Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson missed the match due to a broken arm sustained while celebrating England's round of 16 triumph over Mexico two weeks ago. Despite being sidelined, Henderson addressed the squad at the team hotel before the game. Tuchel described the speech as "very emotional and very, very impressive," noting that Henderson helped frame the match's significance.
"He put into perspective what you might feel in the very moment, that you might give in to the feeling 'I don't want to be here'," Tuchel said. "He took all of that away because he said that it means the world in the end, and he would give anything if he hadn't broken his arm to be part again in this match."
Contrast with France's mindset
The England manager's revelation stood in stark contrast to comments from France defender Ibrahima Konate, a former Liverpool teammate of Henderson. Before the match, Konate admitted that no France player wanted to participate in the bronze final. Konate started the game but was substituted at half-time with France trailing 4-0.
Tuchel emphasised the importance of Henderson's message: "He set the tone and the mindset for this match. You never know when you get a World Cup match for England. He said it much, much better than me and more emotional, and it was very impressive."
England's tournament performance
England's semi-final defeat to Argentina last Wednesday meant they have reached at least the last four in four of their last five major tournaments but remain without a trophy since 1966. Tuchel acknowledged the gap still to close: "I said yesterday we want to close this gap. We feel there's still a gap to close to the top three teams who are ahead of us in the world rankings and that starts with today."
The 6-4 victory over France showcased England's attacking prowess, though Tuchel noted areas for improvement. "We need to play better football under pressure, we need to manage games better under pressure and take better decisions under pressure and defend more economically and disciplined," he said.
Tuchel's praise for team spirit
The manager credited the squad's unity for their performance, stating: "This team built something special in the last seven weeks and we will never negotiate on that." Despite France having an extra day to prepare and a less demanding schedule, England relied on their collective spirit to secure the win.
