A 36-year-old man from south-east England has died after collapsing during the London Marathon on Sunday. The runner, who has not been named, fell between the 23rd and 24th mile of the 26.2-mile course.
London Marathon Events confirmed that the man received immediate medical treatment, with an ambulance arriving within three minutes, but he later died in hospital. The organisers expressed their sincere condolences to his family and friends, who have requested privacy. The cause of death will be determined through a medical examination.
More than 40,000 people participated in the race, which started in Greenwich and finished at the Mall. By 5pm on Sunday, 38,156 of the 40,927 starters had crossed the finish line. Thousands more completed the marathon virtually within a 24-hour window.
The men's race was won by Kenya's Amos Kipruto in 2hr 4min 39sec, while Ethiopia's Yalemzerf Yehualaw won the women's race in 2hr 17min 25sec, the third fastest time in the event's history.
