Joe Wicks Reveals 5 Essential Parkrun Tips for Beginners

Joe Wicks, known as The Body Coach, has shared his top five tips for Parkrun as he encourages more people to get active. The free, weekly 5k event, which started with just 13 participants two decades ago, now sees nearly four million participants. Parkrun welcomes all abilities, with no time limit and a tail walker for those at the back.

Wicks, an ambassador for Brooks Running, emphasises that beginners are welcome. He champions the 'Jeffing' method—alternating running and walking—to reduce pressure. 'You can walk or Jeff 5k and before you know it you will be running it,' he said. 'The average person just wants to get moving and that's the most important thing.'

He highlights the social aspect: 'Rain or shine, all around the world at a certain time each week, there will be someone there to run with you. Even if it's just once a week, it will be great for you.' Wicks also notes the mental benefits of being outdoors with others, calling it 'calming and destressing.'

Wicks stresses that no expensive gear is needed. 'You don't need an Apple watch, Woop band and a £300 kit—you just need a pair of trainers. It's accessible and completely free, which is amazing.'

Finally, he advises setting small goals: 'If today you walked it, next week could you jog some of it and walk the rest. Seeing that progression boosts your confidence and your fitness levels will improve if you're consistent.'
