Marine Veteran's Arm Broken During Senate Hearing Protest Scuffle with GOP Senator
A dramatic confrontation unfolded at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday when a Marine Corps veteran protesting potential military action against Iran suffered a broken arm during a physical struggle with Capitol Police officers and Republican Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana.
Chaotic Scene at Armed Services Committee Hearing
The incident occurred during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing when Brian McGinnis, a Marine veteran wearing his dress uniform, disrupted proceedings to denounce joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran. As Capitol Police officers attempted to remove McGinnis from the chamber, a scuffle ensued that resulted in the protester sustaining a significant injury.
"No one wants to fight for Israel," McGinnis reportedly yelled as officers pushed him toward the exit. During the confrontation, the veteran's arm became wedged in the door frame, with witnesses reporting an audible snapping sound.
Senator's Controversial Intervention
Senator Tim Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL, joined the altercation to assist police, an action that has drawn both support and sharp criticism. As Sheehy returned to his seat following the incident, a member of the public in attendance repeatedly cried out: "A sitting U.S. senator just broke the hand of a Marine."
The same individual called Sheehy a "coward" and a "punk," to which the senator appeared to respond with profanity. McGinnis continued shouting protest slogans as he was finally led away, including references to the Marine Corps' official song and calls to "Free Palestine."
Conflicting Accounts of the Incident
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Senator Sheehy defended his actions, claiming: "Capitol Police were attempting to remove an unhinged protester from the Armed Services hearing. He was fighting back. I decided to help out and deescalate the situation."
The senator added: "This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation, and he got one. I hope he gets the help he needs without causing further violence."
Capitol Police offered a different perspective, stating in their official account that McGinnis "got his own arm stuck in a door to resist our officers and force his way back into the hearing room." The veteran was arrested and now faces multiple charges including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and unlawful demonstration.
Veterans' Groups Condemn Senator's Actions
The senator's decision to involve himself in the physical altercation has drawn strong condemnation from veterans' rights organizations. The campaign group Veterans for Responsible Leadership responded to Sheehy's account by stating: "Let's hope he sues the s*** out of you."
Paul Rieckhoff, a prominent veterans' rights activist and podcaster, commented: "This is very, very ugly. And no U.S. senator needs to inject himself into this situation. For the safety of everyone – including himself. Just unnecessary and terrible to watch. This is what an America falling apart looks like."
Protester's Background and Motivation
Earlier in the day, McGinnis had posted a video outside the Capitol identifying himself as a Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate. In the recording, he explained his presence in Washington, stating he was "here in D.C. trying to speak out against the Senate and ask them why they're going to send our men and women to harm's way when our elected officials said that there would be no world war."
The veteran addressed those feeling disillusioned with government, saying: "Anyone who feels disillusioned and betrayed by our government, you are not alone. Join us in demanding accountability for this betrayal. Free Palestine. Free America."
Both McGinnis and the officers involved received medical treatment for their injuries following the confrontation. The incident has sparked broader conversations about protest rights, congressional security procedures, and the appropriate role of elected officials during such disturbances.
