Trump's Record-Long State of the Union Address Fails to Resonate
Donald Trump entered the US House chamber on Tuesday for his first State of the Union address of his second term, greeted by adoring Republicans eager for selfies and applause. However, the illusion of unity was quickly shattered as Democratic representative Al Green of Texas held up a sign reading "Black people aren't apes!" referencing Trump's recent sharing of a racist video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama.
Chaos and Confrontation in the Chamber
Republicans immediately moved to tear the sign away, leading to Green being escorted out for the second consecutive year. As he departed, acrimonious exchanges erupted, with some Republicans attempting to start chants of "USA! USA!" This set the tone for a night where Trump's 107-minute speech, the longest in history, became a platform for division rather than unity.
The president began with a familiar pitch, declaring, "Our nation is back – bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before." He touted falling inflation, mortgage rates, and gas prices, alongside booming stock markets, oil production, and job growth. However, this Pollyannish version of America contrasted sharply with the reality faced by many citizens struggling to pay bills and make ends meet.
Democratic Resistance and Fact-Checking
While Republicans stood and cheered ritualistically, Democrats remained largely seated, expressing their disapproval through eye-rolls, head-shakes, and phone-checking. Trump soon escalated his rhetoric, targeting Democrats on issues like crime, election integrity, and transgender rights, calling them "crazy" and accusing them of destroying the country.
Race emerged as a central theme, as Trump announced a "war on fraud" led by Vice-President JD Vance, citing a social services scam in Minnesota that he falsely estimated at $19 billion. Representatives Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan shouted "That's a lie!" and "You're a liar!" in response.
Trump then launched into a xenophobic rant, blaming "Somali pirates" and unrestricted immigration for importing corruption into the USA. Omar shook her head in dismay, while Tlaib and Omar set up a real-time fact-checking service from the chamber floor. When Trump boasted about ending eight wars, Tlaib yelled, "It's a lie! What are you talking about?"
Moral Outcry and Walkouts
The confrontation reached a peak when Trump challenged Democrats to stand if they believed the government's first duty was to protect American citizens over illegal aliens. As Democrats remained seated, Trump retorted, "You should be ashamed of yourself." Omar responded with piercing clarity, shouting, "You have killed Americans!" four times, referencing the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
Other interjections included calls to release the Epstein files and accusations of corruption. Despite the lengthy speech, Trump offered little to change his low approval ratings, which stood at 39% positive and 60% negative in a recent poll. The address ultimately proved inconsequential, with Omar, Tlaib, and several other Democrats walking out before the end.
Al Green's seat remained empty, save for a defiant handwritten sign bearing his name. The event underscored deep political fractures and left many Americans questioning the relevance of Trump's message amidst ongoing struggles.
