Trump Celebrates American Heroes in State of the Union Address

President Donald Trump highlighted the bravery of American heroes, both young and old, during his State of the Union speech in the Congressional chamber. The president emphasised that 2026 would be a year to celebrate the nation's 250th birthday and its enduring freedom.

Medal of Honor for Korean War Veteran

Retired United States Navy Captain E. Royce Williams, aged 100, was awarded the Medal of Honor by First Lady Melania Trump for his extraordinary courage during a secret mission in the Korean War. In 1952, Williams engaged seven Soviet MiG fighter jets in an intense aerial dogfight, successfully shooting down four of them despite being heavily outnumbered.

President Trump recounted: "Despite being massively outnumbered and outgunned, Royce led the takedown of four enemy jets ... vanquishing his adversaries while taking 263 bullets to his own plane and being seriously hurt." The details of this mission remained classified for decades due to the top-secret nature of Soviet involvement in the conflict.

Honouring Recent Military Actions

The president also honoured Chief Warrant Officer Eric Slover, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions as a pilot during a recent military operation in Venezuela. Slover piloted a Chinook helicopter during the high-risk mission, sustaining four gunshot wounds to his leg and hip. Remarkably, he maintained control of the aircraft, ensuring the safety of all personnel on board.

Trump stated: "The success of the entire mission and the lives of his fellow warriors hinged on Eric’s ability to take searing pain." In recognition of his bravery, Slover was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom during the address.

Purple Heart Awards for National Guard Members

National Guard Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe was awarded a Purple Heart after being shot and critically wounded while on duty in Washington, DC, in November, just a day before Thanksgiving. In the same attack, National Guard and Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom was killed. President Trump presented her parents, Gary and Evalea Beckstrom, with a posthumous Purple Heart medal in honour of their daughter's sacrifice.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, has been charged in connection with the ambush-style shooting that injured Wolfe and claimed Beckstrom's life.

Recognition for Rescue and Service

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Scott Ruskan was recognised for his heroic efforts during the devastating Texas floods over the Fourth of July weekend, where he helped rescue more than 169 people. President Trump awarded Ruskan the Legion of Merit, with Millie Kate McClemand, one of the young girls he saved, standing beside him during the ceremony.

Additionally, the president acknowledged World War II veteran George “Buddy” Taggart, who stood and saluted as Trump noted his anticipation for July 4th, 2026, which will mark his 100th birthday.

The State of the Union address served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel and first responders, with Trump using the platform to underscore the nation's resilience and commitment to honouring its heroes.
