Trump's Second Term Sees Over 386,000 Federal Jobs Slashed in 16 Months
Official data published on Wednesday reveals a dramatic 12% reduction in the United States government's civilian workforce between September 2024 and January 2026. This substantial cut, amounting to 386,826 federal employees, reflects President Donald Trump's aggressive efforts to streamline government operations during his second term in office.
Significant Reductions Across Key Departments
The workforce reductions were widespread across federal agencies, with some departments experiencing particularly severe losses. The Treasury Department saw its staff numbers plummet by 24%, while the Department of Health and Human Services, under the leadership of Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., faced a 20% reduction in personnel. These cuts align with Trump's campaign promise to eliminate what he described as bloated and inefficient government agencies.
Department of Homeland Security Bucks the Trend
One notable exception to this widespread downsizing was the Department of Homeland Security, which actually experienced slight growth of less than 1% during the same period. This expansion reflects the administration's continued emphasis on immigration enforcement, with Trump consistently prioritizing the arrest and deportation of immigrants as a central policy objective throughout his presidency.
Elon Musk's Controversial Efficiency Drive
The mass layoffs were largely instigated by billionaire Elon Musk, who served as chair of the now-disbanded Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk was appointed as a special government employee, bypassing the need for congressional approval, and immediately embarked on a mission to cut federal spending and eliminate what he termed "fraud" within government operations.
The DOGE, established in January shortly after Trump's return to office, made dramatic interventions across Washington during the early months of Trump's second term. The department worked aggressively to shrink federal agencies, slash their budgets, and redirect their work toward Trump's policy priorities. According to documents reviewed by Reuters, many of DOGE's functions have since been transferred to the Office of Personnel Management, the federal government's human resources office.
Theatrical Approach to Bureaucracy Reduction
Musk's leadership of DOGE was marked by highly publicized, theatrical displays of his commitment to cutting government jobs. At the Conservative Political Action Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, in February, Musk famously brandished a chainsaw while declaring, "This is the chainsaw for bureaucracy." He regularly promoted DOGE's work on his X platform, and the administration made concerted efforts to draw attention to the department through social media posts by Trump, his advisers, and cabinet secretaries.
Despite DOGE's claims of having slashed tens of billions of dollars in government expenditures, outside financial experts found these assertions impossible to verify. The department failed to provide detailed public accounting of its work, leaving the true financial impact of its efficiency measures uncertain. The eventual disbanding of DOGE stands in stark contrast to the extensive publicity campaign that surrounded its operations during Trump's second term.
