Taoiseach Micheal Martin has led heartfelt tributes following the death of former Fianna Fail TD and Ceann Comhairle Rory O'Hanlon, who passed away at the age of 92. Dr O'Hanlon, a former general practitioner, was first elected to the Dail in 1977 and enjoyed a distinguished political career spanning over three decades.
A Life of Public Service
Rory O'Hanlon served in numerous significant positions throughout his tenure, including as Minister for Health and Minister for the Environment. He also held the prestigious role of Ceann Comhairle, the speaker of the Dail, before retiring from politics in 2011. Beyond his political achievements, Dr O'Hanlon was the father of actor and comedian Ardal O'Hanlon, renowned for his portrayal of Dougal McGuire in the beloved television series Father Ted.

In his tribute, Taoiseach Micheal Martin praised Dr O'Hanlon's unwavering dedication to his community and constituents. "Rory cared passionately for his community and constituents," Mr Martin stated. The Fianna Fail leader highlighted Dr O'Hanlon's crucial role in ensuring the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement after 1998. "In this, he drew on his many personal and political relationships, north and south of the border," Mr Martin noted. "He had a great love for the people of Armagh, where he grew up, and of Cavan and Monaghan."
Mr Martin also reflected on their personal relationship, describing Dr O'Hanlon as a "very valued friend" whose insights and advice were greatly appreciated since Mr Martin's own election to Dail Eireann. "He was a wise, astute observer of politics and public affairs," the Taoiseach added. "He had a wonderful sense of humour and was a great raconteur and a wonderful storyteller. He wore his many responsibilities lightly, always choosing to speak of those he served, rather than himself. Rory has left a significant footprint on Irish public life and on the Fianna Fail party."

SDLP leader Claire Hanna also paid tribute, describing Dr O'Hanlon as a "true friend" of her party. "His life was one of dedicated public service," she said. "He began his career as a family doctor and went on to serve for 34 years as TD for Cavan Monaghan. He held a distinguished record as minister for health and as both Ceann Comhairle and Leas Ceann Comhairle in the Dáil."
Ms Hanna emphasised Dr O'Hanlon's commitment to democratic values and peace. "He was a steadfast opponent of those who used violence for political purposes and throughout his career he remained a close ally of Seamus Mallon," she added, referencing the late SDLP deputy leader.
