Swinney Criticises Starmer Over Gaza Stance

SNP leader John Swinney has criticised Sir Keir Starmer over his stance on the Gaza conflict, following a series of resignations from Labour councillors. Swinney accused the Labour leader of failing to call for a ceasefire, which he said was necessary to protect civilians.

Sir Keir has maintained that Israel has a right to defend itself within international law, a position he reiterated in a letter to Labour councillors. However, his comments in a radio interview last week sparked anger among some party activists, leading to around a dozen councillors resigning.

In the letter, Sir Keir emphasised the need for humanitarian corridors and access to food, water, electricity, and medicines for people in Gaza. He also stressed that Israel's actions must be conducted in accordance with international law.

Despite the backlash, Sir Keir's spokesman clarified that the Labour leader's remarks about Israel having the right to defend itself referred only to a general right, not an endorsement of specific actions like cutting off water and power. The party has no plans to change its position.

Swinney's criticism adds to pressure on Sir Keir, who has sought to align with the government's stance on the conflict. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has also declined to back a ceasefire, arguing there is no evidence Hamas would respect it.
