Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to conduct an urgent press conference today, delivering a critical update on the escalating Middle East war and its profound implications for British households grappling with the cost of living crisis. This follows an emergency COBRA meeting convened by Starmer with senior ministers in Whitehall on Tuesday evening, focused on the rapidly deteriorating situation in the region.
Global Energy Prices Surge Amid Conflict
The ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, now entering its fifth week, has triggered a dramatic spike in global energy prices, raising alarms over potential petrol shortages in the UK. The Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route, threatens to disrupt food supplies by impeding fertiliser shipments from Gulf nations. Despite these concerns, the government has moved to reassure the public that there are no immediate petrol supply issues, urging citizens to continue filling up their vehicles as usual.
Trump's Controversial Remarks Add to Tensions
In a contentious development, former US President Donald Trump exacerbated tensions by distancing himself from the conflict, telling the UK and other allies to "go get your own oil". In an angry rant, Trump asserted he had already completed "the hard part" by initiating military action against Iran, shifting responsibility to allies to manage the fallout, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Government's Focus on De-escalation and Domestic Support
Downing Street has emphasised that Starmer is actively collaborating with international allies to push for de-escalation in the Middle East, stating this approach is "the surest and quickest way to bring down pressures on prices" domestically. The Prime Minister is also expected to highlight key cost of living measures from November's Budget that take effect today, including:
- A boost to the national minimum wage for millions of workers.
- A reduction in the energy price cap, saving households an average of £117 until June.
- A freeze on prescription costs to alleviate financial burdens.
Starmer's Reassurance to the Public
In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Starmer affirmed, "In an uncertain and volatile world, it is my government’s duty to protect the British people at home and abroad. I know the public are concerned about the conflict in Iran and what it means for them and their families." He added, "I want to reassure them that they have a government on their side, working with allies on de-escalation and bearing down on the cost of living."
Starmer further detailed the immediate benefits for citizens, noting, "Today, millions of people up and down the country will see energy bills go down by £117, wages go up for the lowest paid, and more support will be available for people who need it most – because of the decisions this government has taken." He stressed the necessity of ongoing efforts, concluding, "But we must go further to bear down on costs, and that means pushing for de-escalation in the Middle East and a re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz. That is the best way we can bring down the cost of living for families and that is my focus."
