Sir Keir Starmer Quits as Labour Leader: What Happens Next?
Starmer Quits Labour Leader: What Happens Next?

Sir Keir Starmer has announced he will step down as Labour leader and Prime Minister, triggering a leadership contest that could see Andy Burnham in Downing Street within weeks. The timetable for the transition was set out by Starmer himself, creating a vacancy that has already sparked intense speculation about his successor.

When Will the Contest Begin?

Starmer stated that nominations for the Labour leadership would open on July 9. Under Labour's rules, candidates must secure the backing of 81 MPs, representing 20% of the party's parliamentary strength, to get onto the ballot. The Prime Minister expressed his desire for the nomination process to be completed before Parliament breaks for the summer recess.

If Andy Burnham—whose return to Westminster was seen as the final blow to Starmer's leadership—is the only candidate, he could become Prime Minister by mid-July. Burnham is widely believed to already have the necessary support from MPs to secure a place on the ballot.

What If There Is a Leadership Election?

If multiple candidates emerge, the new leader will be in place by September 1, when MPs return to Westminster. To compete in a contest, candidates must first secure the support of 81 MPs, then obtain nominations from either 5% of constituency Labour parties or three affiliated organisations (including two trade unions) representing 5% of affiliated membership. Only after passing these stages will candidates proceed to a vote by the party membership.

Labour's ruling National Executive Committee (NEC) is expected to meet shortly to finalise the contest timetable.

Could Anyone Stand Against Andy Burnham?

Former health secretary Wes Streeting has repeatedly claimed he has the 81 names required to mount a leadership bid and has been actively setting out his vision since his resignation. Former Royal Marines officer Al Carns, who quit as armed forces minister over defence funding and the treatment of Northern Ireland veterans, has also hinted at a potential run. However, it remains unclear whether Carns, who was only elected in 2024, has the necessary support to get on the ballot.

What Happens to Sir Keir Starmer Now?

Starmer remains Prime Minister until the King appoints his successor. He is expected to represent the UK at the NATO summit in Turkey starting July 7, appearing alongside world leaders including Donald Trump, despite his diminished authority. His final international engagement could be the UK-EU summit on July 22, where efforts to repair relations with Brussels will be a key part of his legacy.

What Will Sir Keir Starmer Do Next?

Speculation has swirled that Starmer could be offered an international role, such as foreign secretary or another diplomatic position. However, in his resignation speech, he indicated a desire to spend more time with his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer, and their two teenage children. With emotion in his voice, he said: “When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job: being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife, Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad, and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and my joy.”
