Sir Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, is set to be appointed a peer in the House of Lords, joining 25 other new members as Sir Keir Starmer prepares to step down from office. The Labour mayor will take his seat on the red benches alongside former cabinet secretary Sir Chris Wormald and retired senior judge Sir Brian Leveson.
Peerage List Confirmed by Downing Street
The names appeared on a list issued by Downing Street, which stated that the King has been “graciously pleased to signify his intention of conferring peerages.” A Government source praised Khan's tenure, saying: “Sadiq has been a brilliant mayor who has transformed London for the better, so this is thoroughly deserved. He has cut violent crime to record lows, cleaned up the capital’s air, delivered the Elizabeth Line and got London building council homes again.”
Impact on London and National Politics
Khan's peerage marks a significant transition from his role as Mayor, a position he has held since 2016. The appointment comes as part of a broader wave of new peers, reflecting changes in the political landscape as Starmer prepares to leave office. The inclusion of figures like Wormald and Leveson underscores the mix of political and public service backgrounds among the new appointees.
