Chancellor Reeves Slams Trump's Iran War Strategy as 'Folly' Amid Strait Crisis
Reeves Criticises Trump Over Iran War as UK Seeks Diplomatic Solution

Chancellor Rachel Reeves Condemns Trump's Iran War as 'Folly' Amid Global Economic Fallout

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has publicly expressed her anger and frustration at former US President Donald Trump over the escalating Iran War, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer urgently pursues diplomatic solutions to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. In a stark rebuke, Reeves branded the recent US-Israeli military strikes on Tehran as folly, criticising the lack of a clear exit strategy or defined objectives from the outset.

Diplomatic Summit Announced Amidst Blockade

The Chancellor's intervention coincides with an announcement from Prime Minister Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron that they will co-host a critical summit in Paris this Friday. This gathering aims to lay the groundwork for reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passage through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies normally flow. However, officials have clarified that any proposed measures will only be implemented once the active combat phase of the conflict has concluded.

Reeves is currently en route to Washington for International Monetary Fund meetings, where she plans to discuss the widespread economic repercussions of the Middle East turmoil. She is expected to urge international counterparts to follow her lead in addressing the mounting pressures, despite the UK's own economic challenges, including stalling growth and inflation rates that exceed those of other major economies.

Economic Impact and Household Strain

The economic fallout is already being felt across the United Kingdom, with drivers facing steep prices at petrol pumps and growing concerns over impending increases in energy and food bills. According to estimates from the Resolution Foundation think-tank, the average UK household could be £480 worse off this year due to the war's disruptive effects on global markets.

In a candid interview with the Mirror before her departure, Reeves stated: This is a war that we did not start. It was a war that we did not want. I feel very frustrated and angry that the US went into this war without a clear exit plan, without a clear idea of what they were trying to achieve. And as a result the Strait of Hormuz is now blocked.

She further elaborated: Obviously no sensible person is a supporter of the Iranian regime, but to start a conflict without being clear what the objectives are and not being clear about how you are going to get out of it, I do think that is a folly and it is one that is affecting families here in the UK but also families in the US and around the world. I don't think it was the right decision. But it was absolutely the right decision for Keir Starmer - our Prime Minister - to keep us out of this conflict.

Military and Diplomatic Coordination Efforts

Prime Minister Starmer informed Parliament that the UK-French initiative will encompass both military planning to assure shipping security and intensive diplomatic engagement. President Macron has previously characterised the proposed mission as a strictly defensive operation, separate from the warring factions, designed to be deployed when conditions allow.

A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed: The summit will advance work towards a coordinated, independent, multinational plan to safeguard international shipping once the conflict ends. The summit intends to unite nations willing to contribute to this peaceful multinational endeavour.

Westminster Establishes New Crisis Committee

In response to the ongoing crisis, Westminster has established a new Cabinet committee specifically tasked with managing the fallout from the Iran conflict. Number 10 insiders have drawn parallels between this new panel and the committees formed under previous Conservative prime ministers to handle Brexit preparations and the COVID-19 pandemic.

A government source revealed that this new central structure will concentrate on medium-term scenario planning to address regional developments over the coming weeks and months. Alongside the ministerial committee, whose full membership remains undisclosed, senior officials will convene under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Antonia Romeo.

This organisational shift acknowledges the prolonged impact the situation is likely to have on the UK, although the emergency Cobra committee will continue to meet to address immediate crises as they arise.

Global Context and Regional Tensions

The International Monetary Fund is poised to release its updated world economic outlook, featuring revised growth and inflation forecasts globally. Meanwhile, in the Gulf region, Donald Trump's blockade of Iranian ports has taken effect, with the former president threatening to eliminate Tehran's fast attack vessels if they approach American warships. Notably, at least one Chinese tanker has reportedly navigated through the area unchallenged, highlighting the complex geopolitical dynamics at play.
