Fourteen Indian opposition MPs have been suspended following protests over a security breach in parliament, during which two intruders entered the chamber and released coloured smoke. The incident occurred on Wednesday, the 22nd anniversary of a deadly attack on the parliament building.
The suspended MPs include 13 from the lower house (Lok Sabha) and one from the upper house (Rajya Sabha). Derek O'Brien was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for 'ignoble conduct', while the 13 Lok Sabha MPs, from parties including Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, are suspended until 22 December. The suspensions followed demands for a discussion and statements from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Four people have been arrested: two men who entered the chamber and two others who protested outside. Their motive remains unclear. The federal home ministry has ordered an investigation. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the incident was condemned by all and urged caution over visitor passes. Opposition leaders have called for action against BJP MP Pratap Simha, who allegedly signed the passes used by the intruders.
Police have suspended visitor passes until a security review is completed. The accused are expected in court on Thursday. Reports identify them as Neelam, Amol Shinde, Manoranjan D, and Sagar Sharma. Neelam's family said she was unemployed despite holding several degrees. Manoranjan's father condemned his son's actions.
