MP Stephen Doughty Reports Alleged Washington Police Contact to UK Parliament Security
MP reports Washington police approach to Parliament security

Labour MP Stephen Doughty has raised urgent security concerns after reporting an alleged approach by someone claiming to represent the Washington police force. The Cardiff South and Penarth representative formally notified Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle about the incident, which occurred as he entered the Palace of Westminster.

The concerning interaction took place when an individual approached the MP and identified themselves as being from "Washington police". Mr Doughty, who serves on the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, immediately reported the matter to parliamentary authorities, triggering security protocols.

In his statement, Mr Doughty confirmed: "I have reported this to the Speaker's office and the parliamentary security department are dealing with it." The incident has sparked renewed attention on the security measures protecting MPs and parliamentary staff.

Parliamentary authorities have launched an investigation into the approach. A House of Commons spokesperson stated: "We take the safety of members and staff extremely seriously and security measures are constantly reviewed."

The incident comes amid heightened security awareness in Westminster following previous security breaches and attacks on parliamentary democracy. All MPs have been briefed on security procedures and encouraged to report any suspicious activity immediately.

Washington police connections to UK parliamentary matters are particularly sensitive given previous investigations into foreign interference in British politics. Security services remain vigilant about potential attempts to approach MPs or influence parliamentary proceedings.

The Parliamentary Security Department, which handles such incidents, works closely with the Metropolitan Police's Parliamentary Liaison and Investigation Team to ensure the safety of everyone on the parliamentary estate.
