Megyn Kelly has issued a stark warning to former President Donald Trump, asserting that the ongoing Iran conflict could deliver electoral victories to Democrats for the next two decades. The host of The Megyn Kelly Show, who endorsed Trump ahead of the 2024 election, expressed deep skepticism about the war during a recent broadcast, arguing it would irreparably damage the MAGA movement.
Electoral Consequences of Military Escalation
Kelly emphasized that deploying substantial ground forces to Iran would have catastrophic political repercussions for Republicans. 'We cannot send five to 17,000 troops into Iran and ever win a Republican election again for the next 10 to 20 years,' she declared. 'He cannot do that. Everything he built, the entire coalition we were all part of, will be ruined.'
While acknowledging that MAGA supporters remain overwhelmingly loyal to Trump, Kelly noted his eventual departure from the political stage. 'You cannot win an election with just the people describing themselves as MAGA, especially when Trump is not going to be on the ballot in 2028,' she explained. 'And we've seen before that he doesn't necessarily have the coattails for other people who say they're in his mold to get them over the line. You need Republican Party support and independents to win elections, and that is still a golden rule.'
Criticism of War Objectives
Kelly also challenged the reported strategic goal of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments. 'You mean the strait that was open before we began the bombing campaign? It was open. There was no problem with the Strait of Hormuz,' she argued. 'The reason it's closed is because we decided to start a war, and this is the only thing these guys can control, and they know it, and they're doing it rather effectively.'
Public Opposition to Ground Invasion
Citing a Reuters poll from several years ago, Kelly highlighted minimal public support for major military interventions. 'You know what percentage of the American people support a quote, “major ground invasion” by any standard, five to 17,000 American troops is a major ground invasion? Seven percent of Americans would support a major ground invasion.'
Military Planning and Strategic Targets
Reports indicate Trump is considering deploying approximately 10,000 additional ground troops to the Middle East, providing Washington with enhanced military options as peace negotiations with Tehran continue. The president has maintained a 'peace through strength' foreign policy approach, granting Iran ten additional days to reopen the Strait of Hormuz before threatening to destroy their energy infrastructure.
The additional forces would likely be stationed at a U.S. military base within striking distance of Iran's Kharg Island, a key energy asset Trump has threatened to seize. Department of Defense officials familiar with the planning told The Wall Street Journal the deployment would probably include infantry units and armored vehicles.
Currently, around 5,000 Marines and several thousand paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division have been dispatched to the region to bolster defensive capabilities. These troops are intended to provide Trump with leverage during diplomatic negotiations.
Kharg Island: A Strategic Prize
One potential mission for U.S. forces involves capturing Kharg Island, a primary target since hostilities began a month ago. Also known as Forbidden Island, this territory located 16 miles off Iran's coast serves as the Islamic Republic's main hub for oil exports.
By invading and seizing control of its terminal, storage tanks, and pipeline, the United States could effectively cut off the revenue stream that sustains Tehran's economy and funds its military operations. Kharg Island handles approximately 90 percent of Iran's oil output, amounting to up to 1.5 million barrels daily.
The island features:
- A deep-water tanker port
- An operational airport
- Multiple military installations, including the Matla ul Fajr radar station
Despite conducting heavy bombing raids on the island last week, the U.S. Air Force has deliberately avoided targeting its oil infrastructure thus far.
Official Statements and Uncertainty
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated that no final decision regarding ground troop deployments has been made. 'All announcements regarding troop deployments will come from the Department of War,' she said. 'As we have said, President Trump always has all military options at his disposal.'
The escalating situation continues to generate intense debate about military strategy, electoral politics, and the long-term consequences of American intervention in the Middle East.
