Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was heckled and booed as he addressed a vigil in Manchester for the victims of a terror attack at a synagogue. The incident occurred on Friday, following the attack on Thursday at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue.
As Mr Lammy took to the stage, members of the crowd shouted 'shame on you', 'go to Palestine, leave us alone', and 'you have blood on your hands'. The Deputy PM urged people not to participate in demonstrations over the weekend, asking them to 'reflect with all human dignity' and 'stop and stand back'.
The attack claimed the lives of Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66. The terrorist, Jihad Al-Shamie, was shot dead by armed police. It emerged that one of the victims died from gunshot wounds after police opened fire.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer earlier expressed his horror at the attack, calling it a 'dreadful attack' and a 'terrorist attack to inflict fear'. He emphasised the need for the country to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community and to defeat antisemitism.
Sir Keir praised the police response, stating that without their intervention, the consequences 'would have been even worse'. He thanked the officers for their professionalism and speed, noting that brave worshippers barricaded themselves inside the synagogue to keep the attacker at bay.
