The grandson of former US President John F. Kennedy has launched a scathing attack on proposals to rename a federal institution in honour of Melania Trump.
Jack Schlossberg, the only grandson of JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, took to social media to denounce the move as a 'transparent political ploy' that dishonours public service.
In a fiery post, the Harvard-educated lawyer wrote: 'Renaming government buildings after divisive political figures undermines their purpose. This isn't about legacy - it's about scoring cheap points.'
The controversy centres on Republican-led efforts to designate a federal building in Florida after the former First Lady, who became a US citizen in 2006.
Historical Legacy at Stake
Schlossberg argued that such renaming should be reserved for individuals with unquestionable contributions to public service, not used as political currency.
'My grandfather's name on airports and schools wasn't about politics - it was about honouring a life cut short in service to democracy,' he added, referencing JFK's assassination in 1963.
Political Backlash Grows
The proposal has drawn criticism from Democrats and some conservative groups who view it as an inappropriate use of government resources.
A White House spokesperson defended the plan, stating: 'First Lady Melania Trump served with grace and dignity. This recognition is well-deserved.'
Political analysts suggest the move may be aimed at bolstering Trump's support in Florida ahead of potential 2024 election campaigns.
The building in question currently houses several federal agencies, though officials haven't disclosed which specific institution might be renamed.
