President Donald Trump met with FBI Director Christopher Wray, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats at the White House on Monday. The meeting, previously scheduled to discuss congressional requests for information, also addressed Trump's demand that the Justice Department investigate whether his 2016 campaign was infiltrated or surveilled by the FBI.
Following the meeting, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders announced that the Department of Justice had agreed to ask its Inspector General to examine 'irregularities' in the FBI's tactics concerning the Trump campaign. Additionally, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly will arrange a meeting with the FBI, DOJ, DNI, and congressional leaders to review classified information requested by lawmakers.
The DOJ had already indicated it would look into allegations of 'impropriety or political motivation' in the FBI's conduct, according to spokeswoman Sarah Flores. Trump has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that there may have been a 'mole' within his campaign reporting to federal law enforcement, a charge he amplified on Twitter over the weekend.
The meeting comes amid reports that the FBI used a confidential source to speak with Trump campaign advisers about possible ties to Russia. Trump has accused the FBI of planting a spy in his campaign to derail his presidency, a claim that FBI Director Wray has contradicted in previous testimony before Congress.
