Burnham Rules Out Snap Election If He Becomes PM

Rachel Reeves has urged Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to serve a full term in his current role, amid speculation he is plotting to replace Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader. The Chancellor used a media interview to suggest the former Labour cabinet minister should honour his commitment to run the city until 2028.

Despite twice failing to become Labour leader before leaving the Commons, Burnham has repeatedly refused to rule out a bid for the top job. Polls indicate he is the favourite among voters, though not necessarily party members, to succeed Starmer.

The Mail on Sunday reported that allies of Burnham have identified a parliamentary seat that is 'likely to come free' in the coming months. Under the reported plan, Burnham would apply for selection in a vacant seat, with a by-election held on or before local elections in May 2026.

Reeves told Channel 4 News: 'He said that when he stood for mayor that he would serve a full term – and I think that is the right thing to do.' She added that every election she commits to being an MP for that Parliament, and that Burnham made a similar commitment to the people of Greater Manchester.

Strategists working for Burnham have drawn up a shortlist of potential target seats in the North West, including the Greater Manchester seat currently held by suspended former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne. Gwynne denies plans to stand down but is not expected to resume his Westminster career after being suspended over racist and sexist WhatsApp messages.

Downing Street refused to comment on the speculation, stating that the date for the State Opening of Parliament will be announced 'in the normal way'. The Prime Minister could block Burnham's selection through the party's NEC, but doing so would be seen as a humiliating admission of weakness.
