Ex-President Bolsonaro Hospitalised with Pneumonia in Intensive Care
Bolsonaro in ICU with Pneumonia, Hospital Confirms

Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted to an intensive care unit after being diagnosed with pneumonia, according to a statement from a hospital in the capital city of Brasilia. The 70-year-old political figure is currently receiving treatment for bronchopneumonia, a specific type of pneumonia likely caused by aspiration.

Hospital Confirms Serious Condition

The DF Star Hospital confirmed on Friday that Bolsonaro was experiencing high fever, low oxygen levels, sweating and chills before his admission. Medical examinations subsequently confirmed the diagnosis of bronchopneumonia. The hospital stated he is receiving intravenous antibiotics and non-invasive clinical support in the intensive care unit.

Transfer from Prison to Medical Facility

Earlier on Friday, Bolsonaro's eldest son Flávio announced on social media platform X that his father was being transferred from prison to hospital after waking with chills and vomiting. "I ask for prayers that it not be anything serious," Flávio wrote in his post. Flávio Bolsonaro has declared his intention to run for president in the upcoming election, with recent polling showing him nearly tied with current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Background of Legal Troubles and Health Issues

Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted last year by a panel of Supreme Court justices for attempting to overthrow Brazil's democratic system following his 2022 election defeat. The conviction includes charges of:

  • Leading an armed criminal organization
  • Attempting the violent abolition of democratic rule of law
  • Plotting to kill political opponents including President Lula
  • Planning to encourage an insurrection in early 2023

Bolsonaro has consistently denied any wrongdoing regarding these charges. This hospitalization represents the latest in a series of medical issues for the former president, who has been hospitalized multiple times since being stabbed at a campaign event before the 2018 presidential election. In January of this year, police escorted him to the same hospital for brain tests after he fell from his bed.

Ongoing Medical Monitoring

The hospital has not provided a timeline for Bolsonaro's recovery or potential discharge from intensive care. Medical staff continue to monitor his condition closely as he receives treatment for the respiratory infection. The development occurs amid Brazil's ongoing political tensions and preparations for upcoming elections.
