Channel 4's factual drama Vengeance: Murder on the Heath has brought renewed attention to the 2011 killing of Gagandip Singh, a case dubbed the 'Honeytrap Murder' by the tabloids. The two-part series explores the complex relationships and events leading to Singh's death, focusing on the roles of Mundill Mahil and Harinder 'Ravi' Shoker.
Harinder Shoker, referred to as Ravi in the drama, was a friend of Mahil who, along with Darren Peters, decided to 'teach Singh a lesson' after Singh sexually assaulted Mahil. The attack escalated, resulting in Singh being beaten, bundled into a car, and driven to London where the vehicle was set on fire. Shoker was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years.
As of the airing of the drama, Shoker remains in prison serving his sentence. The programme, written by Bafta-winning Aysha Rafaele, presents multiple perspectives on the case, including those of Singh's mother, Tajinder Kaur, who believed her son was manipulated by Mahil. The drama has been praised for its compassionate yet unflinching look at the tragedy.
The case highlights the dangers of secrecy and emotional confusion within tight-knit communities. The drama's ambiguous portrayal of motives and intentions has been noted, but strong performances from the cast, including Sasha Desouza-Willock as Mundill and Ikky Kabir as Ravi, have helped audiences understand the tragic waste of a young life.
