Trump Administration Awards $13 Million in No-Bid Contracts to January 6 Event Planner
According to a recent report, the events company responsible for organizing Donald Trump's rally on January 6, 2021, has been awarded $13 million in no-bid contracts since Trump resumed office. Event Strategies, which has maintained close ties to Trump since his 2015 presidential campaign, received these contracts without the standard competitive bidding process typically required for federal contracts.
Special Treatment for Longtime Trump Ally
The New York Times investigation reveals that the Trump administration bypassed normal procurement procedures to award contracts to Event Strategies, a move that signals "special treatment" due to the firm's deep connections within Trumpworld. While no one at the company was charged with wrongdoing related to the Capitol riot, their involvement in planning the Ellipse rally where Trump encouraged supporters to protest the 2020 election results has drawn scrutiny.
Since Trump's return to office, Event Strategies has received $22 million in federal contracts, with the majority awarded through no-bid processes. Federal regulations require agencies to award contracts "with complete impartiality and with preferential treatment for none," making these awards particularly noteworthy.
Navy Contracts for 250th Anniversary Celebrations
The bulk of the no-bid contracts—totaling more than $10 million—came from the Navy to commemorate the service's 250th birthday. These included:
- Two separate contracts worth $5.2 million each in September 2025 for the "Titans of the Sea" event in Norfolk, Virginia
- A $2.1 million contract for an anniversary event in Annapolis, Maryland
- A $189,000 contract for a concert and cookout in Virginia Beach
In total, the Navy awarded Event Strategies $12.6 million for these celebrations, offering contracts to them "alone" in what the Times described as a "departure from standard practice."
Compressed Timeline Justification
A Navy spokesperson defended the decision, citing a "compressed timeline" to deliver the events and claiming Event Strategies was "the only vendor capable of executing the requirement within the necessary timeframe." The spokesperson noted that the company had already been involved in planning Army 250th events and possessed the "institutional knowledge, production infrastructure, and operational readiness" needed for rapid delivery.
"The Navy received funding through an interagency transfer specifically intended to support time-sensitive production activities tied to this historic milestone," the spokesperson added.
Treasury Department Contract Raises Questions
The Treasury Department awarded Event Strategies a $740,000 contract in January to provide food, drink, and audio-visual services for an event launching "Trump Accounts." According to the report, the company was hired just one day before the event through a "rarely-used loophole meant for urgent needs."
Experts told the Times that this loophole is typically reserved for dire emergencies or "wartime situations," not promotional events for financial products. The Treasury stated it "adheres to all standard processes and procedures for federal contracting and procurement."
Longstanding Financial Relationship
Event Strategies' relationship with Trump dates back to his 2015 presidential campaign launch at Trump Tower. Public filings show the company has netted more than $67 million from political committees supporting Trump over the years. During Trump's 2024 campaign, they planned publicity events including his appearances working a McDonald's fryer, operating a drive-through, and driving a garbage truck.
Tim Unes, president of Event Strategies, told the newspaper the company was "honored to play a role in bringing our nation's 250th celebrations to life" but did not respond to questions about the contracting process. The White House stated it was not involved in awarding the contracts and expects agencies to comply with "standard federal process."
