Streeting Attacks Starmer and Burnham Ahead of Key By-Election

Wes Streeting has launched a fierce attack on both Andy Burnham and Sir Keir Starmer as the crucial Makerfield by-election approaches, with Reform UK gaining ground on Labour. The former health secretary, who resigned from the cabinet after the local elections, delivered a speech in central London accusing the government of presiding over a period of managed decline.

Streeting Criticizes Leadership Rivals

In his address, Streeting blasted Burnham for making "expensive and popular pledges" aimed at winning over the party's left-wing membership. He also insisted he has the backing of 81 Labour MPs, enough to launch a leadership bid to oust Starmer. Streeting argued that recent debates over defence spending highlight "the case for change" and "the need for stronger leadership."

Streeting stated that the United Kingdom is in decline and announced plans to set out an "alternative vision for Britain's future" centered on "progressive capitalism." He warned against a "Dutch auction of the most expensive and popular pledges to appeal to the party faithful at the expense of the British people."

By-Election Implications

The Makerfield by-election, set for Thursday, was triggered after Labour MP Josh Simons resigned to allow Burnham to return to Westminster. Burnham is the favourite to win, but Reform UK is closely challenging him. If Burnham wins, he is expected to launch a leadership bid.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, speaking at the G7 summit in France, defended his record. He pointed to the 2024 landslide victory and a five-year mandate, highlighting investments in the NHS and economic growth. Starmer said, "We have invested in our NHS, waiting lists have come down... and at the same time our economy is stable, and we’ve got the highest growth in the G7 at the moment."
