Outgoing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has appointed London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan as a peer in a resignation honours list of 26 new members of the House of Lords, contrary to his earlier pledge not to issue such honours.
Details of the Honours List
The list, released by Downing Street on July 16, 2026, includes Sir Sadiq Khan among 26 individuals elevated to the upper chamber. Starmer had previously stated he would not create a resignation honours list, a promise that now appears broken.
According to a Downing Street spokesperson, the list was compiled to recognise contributions across public service. The appointments are expected to be formalised in the coming weeks.
Political Reaction
The decision has drawn criticism from opposition parties and transparency campaigners, who accuse Starmer of reneging on his commitment. A Conservative Party spokesman said: "This is yet another broken promise from a Prime Minister who said he would clean up politics."
Sir Sadiq Khan, who has served as Mayor of London since 2016, has not yet commented on his elevation. The move ensures Khan will retain a role in national politics after stepping down as mayor.
