The Seattle Seahawks have parted ways with star running back Cam Akers, nearly three months after their Super Bowl triumph. Akers, who joined the Seahawks last season on the practice squad in November following an injury to George Holani, was released on Monday.
Akers' brief stint in Seattle
The 26-year-old played in three regular-season games for Seattle, including a 27-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers in December, where he returned two kicks for 54 yards. He also appeared in the NFC Championship win over the Los Angeles Rams. Seattle went on to win the Super Bowl with a 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots.
Draft pick prompts roster move
Akers' release comes after the Seahawks selected running back Jadarian Price in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday. Price, taken with the No. 32 overall pick, was one of seven running backs on Seattle's roster, including Zach Charbonnet, Holani, Kenny McIntosh, Jacardia Wright, and free agent signee Emanuel Wilson. Akers' departure frees up a spot for Price and leaves the Seahawks with 82 players on their roster.
Akers, a second-round pick by the Rams in 2020, won a Super Bowl with Los Angeles in 2022. The Seahawks also selected safety Bud Clark of TCU in the second round. Clark, a versatile defensive back, played safety, nickel back, and cornerback for the Horned Frogs and was a two-time second-team All-Big 12 selection.
