Russian Envoy Mocks Starmer Over Resignation Rumours

Russian investment envoy Kiril Dmitriev has mocked Sir Keir Starmer over rumours that the Prime Minister could resign soon, sharing a post from Donald Trump and adding his own taunts. Dmitriev reshared Trump's Truth Social message, which claimed Starmer "will resign," and wrote: "We did it. Starmer's resignation unites us all."

Dmitriev's Baseless Claims

In a subsequent post, Dmitriev baselessly alleged that Starmer "interfered against Trump and for Kamala in the US elections." He then added: "Aliens… for showing your omnipotence & goodness by convincing Starmer to resign within two weeks of the request" before asking, "Can you please do Merz next?"

Trump's Criticism

Trump's own post on Truth Social slammed the Prime Minister for his handling of immigration and energy. He wrote: "Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well! President DJT."

Growing Pressure on Starmer

The rumours follow Andy Burnham's victory in Makerfield on Thursday, which intensified calls for Starmer to step aside. The Prime Minister reportedly spent Friday frantically calling senior Cabinet ministers to gauge support, but found dwindling backing. According to a Government source cited by The Telegraph, several ministers urged him to set a timeframe for his departure.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper are said to have pressed Starmer to resign. Chancellor Rachel Reeves remains one of the few senior Cabinet figures still publicly backing him. Starmer is understood to be spending the weekend with his family as he weighs his options. As of Saturday, Downing Street maintained that he would not resign.
