An Oklahoma state representative has abruptly withdrawn from his re-election campaign following revelations that he sent an artificial intelligence-generated deepfake image depicting himself kissing a woman. John Waldron, 57, announced his decision on Monday, acknowledging he created and transmitted the manipulated digital content.
Politician Cites Personal Stress and Expresses Regret
Waldron told local media outlet NonDoc that he produced the AI image while experiencing what he described as 'enormous personal stress.' He stated, 'I made a mistake, which I instantly regretted. I’ve accepted every consequence that was asked of me.' The former chairman of the Oklahoma Democratic Party emphasized his ongoing remorse, adding, 'I’ve done a lot of personal work. I’m still deeply regretful for making that decision.'
Therapy and Integrity Sacrifice
In a social media announcement addressing his constituents in Northeast Tulsa and District 77, Waldron revealed he has been attending therapy sessions to 'become a better person.' He wrote, 'I sacrificed my integrity, doing something which was wrong and [I] understand what I did was wrong.' The politician stressed that maintaining the woman's anonymity was of 'utmost importance,' respecting her request for privacy.
Waldron explained his withdrawal decision, saying, 'Stepping aside is the right thing to do for the people of District 77 and for me to continue my personal therapy to be a better person.'
Incident Details and Political Fallout
According to reports, Waldron met with the woman, identified as a potential political candidate, in December. Following their meeting, he created the AI deepfake GIF showing them kissing. Waldron claimed he did not intend to send the image to her, calling it a 'foolish mistake on my part.'
Despite filing for re-election just last week, Waldron's name will remain on the June 16 ballot due to the timing of his withdrawal. The Democratic Caucus had already declared it would not support his candidacy and had requested he step down. House Minority Leader Cyndi Munson confirmed in a statement, 'I want to make it very clear that Rep. Waldron was asked multiple times by caucus leadership to step down and not seek re-election.'
Withdrawn Support from Fellow Candidate
N’Kiyla 'Jasmine' Thomas, a candidate for the US Senate, issued a statement distancing herself from Waldron. Although she had supported his candidacy in June, Thomas emphasized she only interacted with him once. She wrote, 'At the time, I was a new candidate who had already experienced disappointment with prior party leadership. Rep. Waldron took the time to sit down with me, listen to my concerns, and made me feel supported, and that mattered to me.'
Thomas continued, 'That said, I did not know him beyond that interaction. And had I known anything like what’s being reported now, I would have never supported his candidacy... I believe women. I take all allegations of harassment and misconduct seriously.'
Waldron, who has served as a state representative since 2018 and previously worked as a teacher, now faces the consequences of his actions as the political community reacts to this unprecedented AI-related scandal.
