In a dramatic reversal, billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk has extended a public olive branch to US President Donald Trump, seemingly mending a fractured political bromance that had captivated onlookers.
From Allies to Adversaries
The relationship between the two powerful figures appeared to have shattered just months ago. The spectacular public falling out was a shocking turn for the duo who had previously campaigned together to secure Trump's election to the White House.
The rift deepened significantly back in June when Musk launched a serious accusation against the President, claiming Trump was named in the Epstein Files and was actively working to prevent their public release. Musk stated at the time: "That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT."
A Sudden Reconciliation
The tide turned on Tuesday following a White House dinner for Saudi Arabian Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which the SpaceX boss attended. Shortly after this event, Musk took to his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to post a conciliatory message.
"I would like to thank President Trump for all he has done for America and the world," Musk wrote. The post quickly garnered massive attention, attracting more than 51 million views and sparking widespread commentary about the billionaire's sudden change of heart.
The Rocky Road to Reconciliation
The conflict had been simmering behind the scenes since Trump's election. Musk had led the government's controversial Department of Government Efficiency until his departure on May 30.
After leaving the post, Musk didn't hold back his criticism of Trump's policies, particularly taking aim at the "Big Beautiful Bill." He expressed his frustration on X, writing: "I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it."
The tension escalated in July when Musk announced the launch of the American Party to challenge Republicans, prompting Trump to accuse him of going "off the rails" and even teasing the possibility of deporting the naturalised US citizen.
However, signs of a thaw had emerged as early as September, when both men were spotted briefly speaking to one another at a memorial service for assassinated right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
The public thank you note marks the most significant indication yet that the two influential figures have put their differences aside, though the long-term stability of this renewed alliance remains to be seen.
