Labour MP Matt Western has faced criticism after publicly calling for a leadership vote against Keir Starmer. Western, the MP for Warwick and Leamington, argued that the party needs a change in direction following recent electoral setbacks. His comments have sparked a backlash from party loyalists who insist Starmer remains the best person to lead Labour into the next general election.
Starmer, who secured a landslide victory just two years ago, has repeatedly stated he intends to fight on as Prime Minister and seek a second term. However, internal manoeuvring has been ongoing, with several potential successors quietly positioning themselves. Among those seen as possible contenders are Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, and Armed Forces Minister Al Carns.
Despite the murmurs of discontent, Starmer's allies have dismissed Western's intervention as unhelpful and premature. A Labour source said the party should focus on delivering for the British people rather than engaging in internal disputes. The Prime Minister's office has declined to comment on the matter, reiterating that there is no vacancy for the leadership.
