Netflix has greenlit a new YA drama series titled Calabasas, from Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen and executive producers Kim Kardashian, Alexandra Milchan, and Emma Roberts. The series, inspired by Via Bleidner's book If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous By Now, follows a headmaster's ambitious daughter at an elite private school in the affluent town of Calabasas, who becomes entangled in a forbidden romance with a boy determined to challenge the status quo.
Van Dusen, who serves as showrunner and executive producer under his overall deal with Netflix, has transformed the project into a sweeping, high-stakes love story. The series marks his second for the streamer after Bridgerton, which he created and ran for its first two seasons. Kim Kardashian, whose family brought global attention to Calabasas, has been a driving force behind the series, working alongside fellow executive producers Emma Roberts and Alexandra Milchan.
Netflix originally acquired Calabasas in April 2024 after a bidding war, with a different showrunner and premise. The current iteration, under Van Dusen's leadership, has been completely reimagined. The series joins Netflix's growing YA roster, which includes Ginny & Georgia, Outer Banks, and upcoming titles like The Body and Poser.
Jinny Howe, Netflix's Head of Scripted Series for the US and Canada, praised the collaboration, stating, 'It’s exciting to reunite with Chris Van Dusen and bring his distinct voice to Calabasas, alongside the powerhouse team of Kim Kardashian, Emma Roberts, and Alexandra Milchan.' Van Dusen expressed his enthusiasm, calling the series 'the kind of glamorous, bold, addictive and emotionally-charged show I grew up obsessed with.'
