IRS staff sit on desks amid severe rat infestation in Georgia office

A former Internal Revenue Service employee has resigned and blown the whistle on a severe rodent infestation at a federal office facility in Georgia, where staff have been forced to sit on their desks to avoid rats on the floor.

Sydney Monger, who worked at the IRS facility on Chamblee Tucker Road for eight months, said conditions deteriorated rapidly after the Memorial Day weekend. She told local media that rats were everywhere, falling from ceilings and running over people's feet.

Visual evidence shared by Monger shows dead rodents, widespread droppings, and numerous traps deployed throughout the property. She said standard traps proved ineffective against the size of the rodents, though additional black bait stations have been placed outside the building.

An IRS spokesperson acknowledged the aging facility faces pest-related challenges and confirmed the agency is investigating and remediating the situation. Multiple internal complaints have been received.

Monger said she resigned over health concerns, particularly after colleagues began falling ill. “I’m scared to bring something back to my kids,” she said. “I got babies, I can’t be playing. There’s already viruses out there.”
