In a surprising move, the FX network has decided to cancel the critically praised comedy series 'English Teacher' after just two seasons. The decision comes despite the show achieving exceptional ratings and cultivating a dedicated fanbase, with its abrupt end being linked to serious allegations made against its creator and lead actor, Brian Jordan Alvarez.
The Allegations and Network Response
The controversy erupted just days before the show's debut in September 2024. According to a report by Vulture, Alvarez's former friend and co-star, Jon Ebeling, accused the 38-year-old actor of sexual assault. Ebeling claimed the incident occurred while they worked together on a mid-2010s web series, The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. He further alleged that Stephanie Koenig, his ex-girlfriend and a close friend of Alvarez, supported the actor's behaviour.
Alvarez has consistently denied all accusations, stating that any sexual interactions were entirely consensual. Despite the serious claims, FX initially stood by the show, renewing it for a second season. A network spokesperson stated at the time, "We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns."
A Critically Acclaimed Run Cut Short
The cancellation announcement was made on Wednesday, 13 November 2025, marking a stark end for a series lauded by critics. The show's second season, which premiered in September 2025, had earned a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. This followed an equally impressive 98 percent score for its debut season in 2024.
'English Teacher' starred Alvarez as Evan Marquez, a gay high school English teacher in Texas navigating the complexities of his personal and professional life. The ensemble cast included Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Collantoni, Sean Patton, and Carmen Christopher. The first season followed a weekly release model on Hulu, while FX released all ten episodes of the second season at once in September 2025.
Fallout and Future Implications
FX has not publicly disclosed its specific reason for cancelling the show and did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Independent. Alvarez has also not commented directly on the cancellation but has used his social media platforms to repost messages of support from his colleagues in the industry.
Alvarez, who gained fame from roles in Will & Grace and Jane the Virgin, is also a prominent internet personality. Known for his viral comedic sketches on Instagram and TikTok, including his beloved character TJ Mack, he had previously used his online influence to promote the show, even sharing a series of shirtless dancing videos in November 2024 that went viral.
The demise of 'English Teacher' highlights the ongoing challenges media companies face when serious off-screen allegations are levelled against the creators of successful on-screen content, forcing a balance between artistic merit and corporate responsibility.
