EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch to Step Down in 2027

Trevor Birch, the chief executive of the English Football League (EFL), has announced he will step down at the end of the 2026-27 season. The decision was communicated to the EFL board on Friday, marking a significant leadership change for the organisation.

Birch, who has held senior roles at clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and Swansea City, said: 'It has been a privilege to serve as chief executive of the EFL. With one more season ahead, my focus is on supporting the league, our clubs and colleagues, and ensuring a smooth and orderly transition to new leadership.'

The announcement comes after Rick Parry was re-elected as EFL chair for a further three-year term at the league’s annual general meeting. Parry praised Birch's contribution, stating: 'Trevor has led the EFL with clarity and commitment during an important period for the league. The board is thankful for his contribution and fully supports the approach being taken to ensure an orderly handover and continued stability in the 12 months ahead.'
