Billy Joel's daughter, Alexa Ray, has revealed that the singer is recovering well after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) last year. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said: 'He's doing physical therapy regularly, and he's doing great. He's lost weight as he's on his diet. I'm so proud of him. He's such a trooper, so resilient and committed to being healthy and proactive. He's a fighter.'
Joel cancelled all his concert dates in May 2025 after the diagnosis, which affects his hearing, vision and balance. His last full performance was in February 2025, when he collapsed onstage. A representative stated at the time that the condition had been 'exacerbated by recent concert performances' and that Joel was undergoing physical therapy and advised to refrain from performing.
In July 2025, Joel appeared on Bill Maher's podcast, saying he felt 'fine' but his 'balance sucks', comparing it to 'being on a boat'. He added: 'They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder. It sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling.'
Joel made a surprise return to the stage in January 2026, performing two songs with a cover band in Wellington, Florida. He was joined by his daughters Della and Remy for the performance, which marked the town's 30th anniversary.
