Coronation Street actor Jonathan Howard has teased the fate of his character Carl Webster during the soap's murder week, expressing hope for a redemptive arc if Carl survives the upcoming twists.
Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Howard hinted at Carl's potential future on the show, stating: 'If Carl survives I think everything he is gonna go through this week will be life-changing for him. If he dies, the Websters, or most of them, are gonna be mixed emotions. If he survives then hopefully he has the chance to redeem himself a little bit.'
The actor acknowledged that Carl's recent actions, including blackmailing his mother Debbie Webster and exploiting her dementia, have been challenging to portray. He noted that Carl's only redeeming feature was his love for Debbie, but now that he has taken advantage of her, he hopes for a change of heart.
Howard added: 'He's a selfish, egotistical brat and he just needs his comeuppance. Maybe a slap around the face and he'll change his ways.' He also expressed a desire for Carl to retain some of his annoying traits, saying: 'As long as he can still be an annoying little brat. If he didn't lose that I'd be happy to have a bit of humility.'
Reflecting on a possible exit, Howard said he would be 'grateful' for his time on the soap, calling Carl 'so much fun to play.' Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
