Bafta-nominated BBC comedy Film Club cancelled after one series

The BBC comedy series Film Club, starring Aimee Lou Wood, has been cancelled after just one season. The six-episode show aired in October last year and followed an agoraphobic film lover struggling with her best friend moving away.

Despite positive reviews and a Bafta TV Award nomination for Wood in the Best Actress category, the series will not return. According to Deadline, the decision was mutual between creators Wood and Ralph Davis and the BBC, with Wood keen to focus on other writing projects and the broadcaster relaxed about moving on.

The romcom was well-received by fans, with many praising it on social media. One viewer wrote on X: 'Film Club series with Aimee Lou Wood should be on Netflix, so everyone could watch it too.' Another called it 'unbelievably good'.

Wood, who also received a Bafta nomination for her role in The White Lotus, told The Independent last year that she was inspired to write Film Club after watching many films during lockdown. She wanted to portray 'neurotic, messy people falling in love' rather than typical cool characters.

Wood recently hosted Saturday Night Live UK, sparking calls from viewers for her to join Doctor Who after a sketch in which she played a companion. The BBC and Wood's representative have been contacted for comment.
