Adnan Januzaj: From Man Utd's 'New Ronaldo' to Sevilla Pay Cut

Adnan Januzaj, once hailed as Manchester United's next Cristiano Ronaldo, has seen his career take a dramatic turn. Now 31, the Belgian winger was forced to take a pay cut last year to remain at Sevilla, where he has struggled for regular game time since joining in 2022.

Januzaj burst onto the scene at Old Trafford under David Moyes in the 2013/14 season, making 35 appearances and scoring four goals. However, he fell out of favour under Louis van Gaal, leading to loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland, where he failed to score in 25 league appearances for the Black Cats.

He revived his career at Real Sociedad, making 168 appearances and scoring 23 goals over five seasons, winning the Copa del Rey. But his move to Sevilla in 2022 has not gone to plan, with injuries and poor form limiting his impact. He was loaned to Istanbul Basaksehir in 2023 and Las Palmas last season.

This season, Januzaj has made 13 appearances, his best tally for Sevilla. He agreed to a wage cut in 2025 to stay at the club, saying: 'I wanted to play here, giving my best for Sevilla, because I haven't had the opportunity for the last three years.'

Reflecting on his career, Januzaj said: 'If I listened to everyone's opinion, I'd be dead, I'd quit football and stay home. Football can change a lot; today you're the best and tomorrow you can be the worst.'
