With just two weeks until Mauricio Pochettino must name his 26-man squad for this summer's World Cup, the USMNT head coach faces a daunting selection challenge. In 24 games at the helm, Pochettino has handed minutes to 61 different players, leaving little evidence of a settled core. Only six players have logged over 1,000 minutes under his watch, while 34 have played fewer than 250.
Tim Ream leads all outfield players with 1,557 minutes, while Cade Cowell has the briefest appearance at just 12 minutes. Fifteen players have made at least ten appearances, but intriguingly, four of the 29 players with five or fewer caps appear certain to make the final squad. The goalkeeper battle remains fluid: Matt Turner has impressed in MLS with 5.6 goals prevented, but Zack Steffen has been the league's fourth-worst goal preventer at -3.2.
At full-back, Antonee Robinson and Sergiño Dest are still presumed starters despite injury concerns. Max Arfsten has appeared in two-thirds of Pochettino's matches but is best suited as a wing-back in a back three. Freeman's rapid rise from Orlando City to Villarreal has seen him earn two La Liga starts, and his positional discipline offers a reliable alternative to Dest's injury woes.
Pochettino's rotation policy means several established names could miss out, while lesser-known players like Cade Cowell and DeJuan Jones may force their way into contention. The final squad announcement on 26 May will reveal whether Pochettino trusts his experimental picks or reverts to experience.
